A rotary pump or motor comprises a rotor 14, Fig. 1, having integral shaft bearing portions 16, 17 and diametrically opposite vanes 33, Fig. 2, engageable with cut-outs 32 in roller abutments 31. Interchangeable inlet and outlet ports 41, 42 open into annular rotor recesses 43, 54 respectively connected by slanting passages 44, 46 and 52, 53 with rotor recesses 47, 48 and 49, 51 on opposite sides of the vanes so that the rotor is in substantial fluid balance. Surfaces 82 on the radial extremities of the vanes are interconnected by a diametrical passage 81 to further balance the rotor. Recesses 58, 59, Fig. 4, associated with each roller abutment 31 are spaced on either side of and each equal to half the width of the working chamber 29. These recesses are connected by passages 64, 65, 66 and passages 61, 62, 63 to the working chamber 29 and similarly a recess 67, Fig. 6, separated from the recess 58 and a similar recess 68 (not shown) separated from the recess 59 are connected by passages 69, 70, 71 and 72, 73, 74 respectively to the chamber 29. Recesses 94, 96 diametrically opposite the recesses 58, 67 and 59, (68 not shown) and diametrically opposite a recess 91 adjacent the roller abutment and in alignment with the working chamber are also interconnected by passages. Thus the roller abutments 31 in all positions are also fluid-pressure balanced. Seepage from the working chamber 29 along the shaft bearing portions 16, 17 and passages 88, 89 in these portions permit lubrication of the shaft bearing portions.
