Abstract
939,862. Registration apparatus for printing machines. LINOTYPE & MACHINERY Ltd. March 8, 1962 [March 9, 1961], No. 8685/61. Class 100 (2). [Also in Group XX] Apparatus for facilitating the registration of a printing plate 18 on the plate cylinder 5 of a rotaty press relatively to an artist's layout or proof 19 located on the impression cylinder 4, which is of the same diameter, comprises a manually portable housing 1 having legs 3 and 6 to accurately locate the housing relatively to the two cylinders, the housing containing an optical unit so arranged that images from both the plate 18 and the layout or proof 19 may be superimposed for the observation of any registration errors therebetween. The housing embodies compartments 10 and 11 locating electric lamp bulbs 12, 13, the light from which projects on to the plate 18 and the proof 19 through respective openings 16 and 17. The reflected images from each cylinder are superimposed in a dichroic layer 20 and reflected through prisms 21 and 22 on to an object lens 23 for passage therethrough to an adjustable and readily replaceable telescopic eyepiece 24. The legs 3, 6 carry pads, the surfaces 7, 8 and 9 of which may be detachable. The surfaces 9 may have secured thereto, e.g., magnetically, interchangeable shims 41 to accommodate different thicknesses of printing plate. In a modification a tube 34, Fig. 6, replaces the housing 1 and the images from the cylinders are conducted to the adjustable eyepiece through a dichroic layer 20, positive lens 30, a field stop 31 and an erection lens 32. The light sources are contained in chambers on either side of the tube.
