Abstract

871,664. Registering multi-colour printing surfaces. HALL PRINTING CO., W. F. June 18, 1958, No. 19464/58. Class 100(2) Multi-colour printing plates are registered on printing cylinders by inserting substantially identical longitudinal and transverse co-ordinate lines 3, 4 (Fig. 1) upon each of the printing cylinders 1, preparing a planar layout surface 5 (Fig. 3) having inscribed lines 8, 9 proportionally disposed on the surface 5 to those lines 31, 4<SP>1</SP> on the developed surface of one of the printing cylinders, forming a transparent proof 10 from one of the plates to be used, disposing the proof over the surface 5 and indexing the proof at 12, 13 and/or 12<SP>1</SP>, 13<SP>1</SP> (Fig. 4) in accordance with the lines 8, 9, disposing the proof over one of the printing plates and relatively bringing the printing conformations on the plate into registry with the image on the proof, and indexing the printing plate in relative registration with the indices on the proof. The lines 8 and 9 inscribed on the surface 5 bisect the lines 4<SP>1</SP> and 3<SP>1</SP> respectively. After the marks 12, 13 have been made on the proof 10 it is placed upon a marking fixture 14 (Fig. 5) which comprises a flat metal plate having inscribed lines 15, 16 corresponding to the lines 8, 9. The proof is positioned with the marks 12, 13 on the lines 15, 16 and holes are punched in the proof by puncher 17. A further, cylindrically shaped, fixture 19 (Fig. 7) is provided and has pairs of grooves 20, 21 corresponding to lines 4, 3, and grooves 25, 28 for locating elements by which a printing plate 24 may be positioned. Over the plate the proof 10 is placed in correct location by means of pins 23 on annular bands 22 which engage the holes prescribed in the proof. The plate is then positioned to register with the proof and the latter removed. A notching tool, adapted to slide in the grooves 20, 21, is then used to make notches in the plate 24. The plate 24 is then removed from the fixtures 19 and clamped on the cylinder 1 in a position in which the notches are aligned with the lines 3, 4.
