926,879. Directional couplers. NIPPON TELEGRAPH & TELEPHONE PUBLIC CORPORATION. May 12, 1959 [May 13, 1958; Dec. 10, 1958], No. 16193/59. Class 40 (8). [Also in Group XXXVI] A directional coupler comprises two orthogonally disposed rectangular waveguides 1, 2 having a common broad-wall partition of quadrilateral form in which a rotatable slot is arranged on one of the diagonals. The slot may be dumb-bell shaped or elliptical in form and is capable of being revolved at high speeds. The coupler may be used as a measuring bridge for ascertaining the value of an impedance Zx. Power travelling towards this impedance and power reflected from it is coupled into the waveguide 2 and divides into two equal components which propagate in opposite directions. One end of the waveguide 2 is terminated by a matched load 4 and the other by a square law detector connected to measuring circuitry (see Group XXXVI). A frequency-dependent attenuator 5 is included in the waveguide 2 to compensate the variation of the coupling coefficient with frequency.
