Abstract

Cellulosic fabrics are bleached by applying to the fabric, by a pad technique, an aqueous peracetic acid solution containing a chelating or sequestering agent which is stable to peracetic acid, allowing the padded fabric to stand, preferably 12 to 24 hours, and then washing the fabric. Both padding and washing are carried out at ambient temperatures. The preferred chelating or sequestering agent is the sodium salt of diethylene triamine penta-acetic acid in a concentration of, e.g. 0,05 g./litre. The concentration of the peracetic acid should be at least 0,5 g./l, preferably 2-4 g./l. The bleaching bath may also contain, e.g. wetting agents, sodium hexametaphosphate, and also sodium chlorite or hypochlorite. The term "cellulosic" includes natural cellulose, e.g. cotton, regenerated forms, e.g. viscose rayon, and cellulose derivatives such as acetates.
