Abstract

Copper-contaminated cellulosic fibres, i.e. natural cellulose fibres, e.g. scoured or unscoured cotton, linen and jute, regenerated cellulose and cellulose derivatives alone or in admixture with other natural fibres, e.g. wool, and/or synthetic fibres, e.g. nylon, are treated prior to bleaching with a peroxy compound, e.g. hydrogen peroxide, sodium peroxide and peracetic acid, with an aqueous solution containing oxalate ions and an acid other than oxalic acid, e.g. hydrochloric acid, sulphuric acid and Caro's acid, at a pH below 3,6. The oxalate ions, which are preferably present in a concentration of 0,1-2 gms./litre, may be derived from oxalic acid or a salt thereof, e.g. sodium oxalate. The acid content of the aqueous solution is preferably not greater than 2% by weight and the treatment is preferably carried out a temperature of 10 DEG -70 DEG C. Hydrogen peroxide bleaching solutions may contain sodium silicate, soda ash, caustic soda, magnesium sulphate and wetting agents.
