Abstract

Cellulosic textiles are bleached by wetting them with two aqueous solutions in either order or both together, one solution-containing an alkali or alkaline earth metal chlorite, including magnesium chloride, acidified to a pH of 5-7 and the other solution being prepared by admixing water, formaldehyde and a hydrazide having the formula (CONHNH2)2, R(CONHNH2)x, R1(CONHNH2)x or R11(CONHNH2)x in which R is hydrogen, a saturated hydrocarbon chain or a hydroxyl substituted hydrocarbon chain, R1 is a saturated hydrocarbon chain interrupted by oxygen, R11 is a saturated hydrocarbon chain interrupted by sulphur, each of R, R1 and R11 having less than 9 carbon atoms, and x is an integer less than 4, the proportions by weight based upon the total weight of both solutions being 100 parts of water, 0,002-2 parts of chlorite, 0,002-0,1 parts of formaldehyde and an amount of hydrazide which is 2-10 times the weight of the formaldehyde, and then heating them at 80 DEG -100 DEG C. while they are wet with the solutions. Suitable hydrazides are those of formic, acetic, propionic, glycolic, adipic, oxalic, diglycolic, thiodiglycolic, tartaric and citric acids. The chlorite solution which may be adjusted to the desired pH value by the addition of acetic or cyanuric acid may also contain chlorine dioxide repressors, e.g. ethylenediamine, diethylene-triamine and triethylenetetramine. The textile may be impregnated with the formaldehyde-hydrazine solution and then passed to the chlorite bath, bleaching being effected by heating the chlorite bath to 80 DEG -100 DEG C. while the textile resides therein for 1-2 hours or by heating the textile to 80 DEG -100 DEG C. in a steam box for 1-2 hours after impregnation with the chlorite solution. Alternatively the textile may be impregnated with an aqueous solution containing the chlorite, formaldehyde and hydroxide and bleaching effected by heating the solution to 80 DEG -100 DEG C. while the textile is retained therein for 1-2 hours or by heating the impregnated textile to 80 DEG -100 DEG C. in a steam box for 1-2 hours. Textiles comprising cotton, linen or regenerated cellulose fibres or in admixture with up to 50% by weight of other fibres, e.g. "Dacra" (Registered Trade Mark), may be bleached.
