Abstract
Unsized cellulose fabrics are cellulose fabrics which have been desized and treated for mote removal, are bleached by impregnating them with an aqueous hydrogen peroxide solution having a pH of 8.5-10 and containing, by weight, 1%-1.75% of hydrogen peroxide, 2%-4% of a molecularly dehydrated salt of phosphoric acid, e.g. sodium tripolyphosphate, sodium hexametaphosphate or tetrasodium pyrophosphate, and 0.3%-0.6% of a sequestering agent, e.g. ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid or a sodium salt thereof or a sodium salt of a pentaacetic acid, so that the fabrics take up 80%-120% of their weight of solution, heating the wetted fabrics to 100 DEG C.-130 DEG C. for 20-90 seconds to remove at least 90% by weight of the water present, and washing the residual chemicals out of the fabrics with water not more than 16 hours after the heating has been completed. Prior to bleaching, sized fabrics, which may be of cotton, jute or ramie, may be treated with an aqueous enzyme solution containing a detergent, boiled for 1 1/2 hours with a 4% by weight sodium hydroxide solution and washed with water to remove sizing agents and motes. The hydrogen peroxide may be introduced into the bleaching solution as 35% aqueous hydrogen peroxide or in the form of sodium peroxide. The bleaching solution may be adjusted to a pH of 8.5-10 by the addition of sodium or potassium hydroxide and may contain a buffer, e.g. 0.4%-0.6% by weight of borax or other boric acid derivative. Prior to rinsing with water the fabrics may be mercerized with caustic alkali. Specifications 576,030 and 793,733 are referred to.
