In a return tube steam and/or hot-water boiler in which a furnace chamber, flue and combustion chamber are mounted longitudinally in series within an outer shell, the combustion chamber has a part of its wall extending in a substantially axial direction and the return tubes are attached to this part by bent end portions which lie at right angles or at least at a substantial angle to said part of the wall. In the form shown, Fig. 1, a furnace chamber 4, a flue 5 and a combustion chamber 6 of partspherical form and of greater mean diameter than the flue 5, are arranged coaxially and in series and lie within an outer shell 1 which encloses also the steam and water space. Return tubes 7 are attached at their bent end portions to the combustion chamber, said portions lying perpendicularly to the wall of the chamber at the point of attachment which is adjacent the flue 5. A second series of return tubes 8 discharge into an annular chamber in direct communication with the boiler chimney. In modifications, Figs. 2, 3 and 4 (not shown), the combustion chamber is respectively cylindrical, frusto-conical and of part-spherical form.
