A water jacketed combustion chamber has a concave end wall opposite the wall from which a burner projects axially, the burner wall is of concave mushroom form with the burner forming the stem and the dimensions of the chamber and the burner performance are so related that vortices RZ are formed around the flame F. The burner wall is water cooled, and flame tube R lead to a smoke box S beyond the concave end wall.
