Abstract

916,266. Making paper &c. bags. PROTECTIVE PACKAGING (DEVELOPMENTS) Ltd. Feb. 24, 1961 [March 7, 1960], No. 8053/60. Class 94(2). One edge of a bag 21, Fig. 3, is sealed by pressure-sensitive adhesive 26, which permits opening and resealing of the bag, and another edge is left open for filling and subsequently permanently sealed. In Fig. 1 a web e.g. of paper, regenerated cellulose, or polythene, is supplied with strips of adhesive on the lower and upper surfaces of its lower edge and with a tape 16 of pressure-sensitive adhesive on its upper edge. The lower edge is turned over at 11 for reinforcing and the upper edge of the tape is turned over to provide pull tabs 25 in the completed bag. Lengths 17 of the web are severed and each length is folded back upon itself to form a bag with top and bottom edges sealed by the adhesive 26, 12, Fig. 3, and an open side, with a flap 20, through which the bag contents may be filled. After filling, the flap 20 is folded over and heat sealed. To open the bag the tabs 25 are pulled and after removal of some of the contents the pressure sensitive adhesive 26 permits resealing by pressure. In a modification the pressure sensitive adhesive 32, Fig. 4, is applied directly to the turned over edge 30 of the web. Alternatively a single adhesive tape 33, Fig. 6 (not shown), on one side of the bag may be folded over on to the other side. In a modification superposed webs are used with tapes of pressure-sensitive adhesive secured to the upper edges of the two webs and to one another. Lengths of the double web are cut off and heat sealed along two of the remaining edges leaving the fourth edge open for filling. The superposed webs may be replaced by a single longitudinally folded web.
