Abstract

1,232,248. Packaging surgical sponges. PRATT MFG. CORP. 21 Aug., 1968 [29 Aug., 1967], No. 39953/68. Heading B8C. A flat package for a surgical sponge 13 comprising two attached panels 10, 11, at least one whereof is preferably of a material permitting the passage of steam for sterilization of the sponge 13, includes a portion 12 of the panel 11 folded over the sponge 13 at 20 and attached to the panel 11 in edge regions 9, with the panel 10 being attached along edge regions 17 and 15, 16 to the panel 11, and to the portion 12 in the edge regions 9 adjacent lines of slits or perforations 8 in the panel 10, and in a region 18 which leaves an unattached region T between the panel 10 and portion 12 into which a thumb of one hand can be inserted as the panel 10 is detached, leaving portions 7 thereof adjacent the lines 8 attached to the portion 12, by pulling with the other hand at a flap 14 of the portion 12 which projects beyond the fold 20 and, Fig. 6 (not shown), may be folded thereover to provide a dust seal. In forming the package, the panel 10 is initially attached to the portion 12 at 18, whereafter the panel 11 is folded along fold 20 and, after inserting the sponge 13, the remaining attachments are effected. The panel 11 preferably comprises a thin sheet of transparent polyethylene or polypropylene film, or propylene coated foil, and the panel 10 preferably comprises a steam permeable bleached Kraft whereby the panels are attached by heat sealing. Alternatively, if the panel 10 comprises the heatsealable film and the panel 11 the porous paper, the fold 12 is attached to the panel 11 by the application of an adhesive or heat sealable material. If both panels comprise Kraft paper the attachments are effected by an adhesive printed thereon.
