Abstract

898,641. Packages, pouches, plastic film bags. BROWN, S. July 3, 1958 [July 24, 1957; Sept. 2, 1957; Jan. 1, 1958], Nos. 23462/57, 27597/57 and 71/58. Classes 66, 94(1), 94(2) and 133. Bags or containers formed wholly or in part by plastic sheet have weakening lines arranged to be torn by transverse stress in the plane of the material, the lines being such as not to perforate the package, and being formed by placing the sheet between plane and ribbed plates and reducing the distance between them with accompanying application of heat. The invention may be applied to bags formed by sealing two sheets of material adjacent their edges, the material being thinned along a line adjacent one end. A pouch, Fig. 4, may have a weakening line 27 which also serves as a seal to secure a strip 25 with tabs 28, 29 to facilitate opening by pulling in opposite directions. The filled pouch is sealed along a line 15. Semi-rigid containers with sealed-on inset or flush covers may have a weakening line 47, Fig. 12, a portion of which, 46, passes through a tab 48, the tab being pulled to tear the portion and initiate tearing along the entire line. A cylindrical container may have a single weakening line round the body beneath the sealed on cover, or a pair of such lines 74, 75 may be joined by a further weakening line passing through a tab 76, the further line being torn on pulling the tab to permit removal by tearing of the strip between the lines 74, 75.
