The removable coin box 1 of a coin-freed apparatus has a pivoted spring-loaded shutter 6 for closing the coin slot 3 and has a spring- loaded latch 12 that holds the shutter in open position before insertion in the apparatus but co-operates with a trigger 5 fixed to the apparatus so that the shutter is cocked to close under the action of its spring when the box is next removed from the apparatus. When a box has been emptied of its contents after opening a door 2 which is locked by a padlock through a hasp 24, the shutter is moved to the open position by a handle 9 and a step 16 on the latch engages behind a lug 10 on the shutter to hold the latter open. On insertion of the box into the apparatus, the trigger 5 enters the box through a hole 4 and its lower surface 27 engages a cam surface 18 on the latch to depress it and release it from the lug 10; the deep wall 28 on the trigger now co-operates with another lug 11 on the shutter to hold it open. On subsequent removal of the box, the reduced portion 29 of the trigger releases the lug 11 and the shutter swings to closed position. If the box is inserted without the shutter being moved to the open position, the cam 18 is above the surface 27 and prevents full insertion of the box. If the shutter is prevented from closing by a blocking body placed in the coin slot, removal of the box may be prevented by the provision of a second step 19 on the latch to co-operate with a lug 30 on the trigger. In a modification. Fig. 8, the shutter 45 and latch 37 are mounted within a double wall on a pivoted door 35 forming the top of the coin box and securable to it by a cylinder lock 38. The lugs 47 and 46 correspond to the lugs 10 and 11 of the previous embodiment and the lug 48 to the handle 9. The trigger 5 may be of pressed sheet metal and be secured to a cradle formed with flanges to provide a slideway for slides 26 on the coin box.
