Abstract
236,881. Tonks, W. H., and Sparks, W. April 10, 1924. Fastenings for doors.-In a coin-freed lock the outside handle may be operated fully more than once before opening the door without thereby preventing access to the compartment and the inside handle, may be operated without imparting any movement to the indicator plate and/or the coin-slit closing device. The lock is provided with a bevel-ended sliding member 18, Fig. 1, adapted to be displaced into the lock casing against the action of a spring 22 by closing the door, the end 19 of the slide co-operating with a catch plate 20 on the door jamb. The catch plate has a projection 20<A> which engages a hole in the lock to ensure that it is placed in proper position, when the lock is being fixed. The slide 18 carries a spring-controlled detent 21 which engages under a projection 15A on an indicator plate 15 to hold this in its raised or " engaged position, so that, if the inside handle is operated without opening the door, the indica. tor plate does not fall. The plate 15 when raised acts on means for closing the coin-slit. Coin action, mechanical-connection and multiple coin.-A coin in a carrier 3 on the spindle 2 of the outside handle displaces a pivoted detent 7 to allow the handle to be turned. When the handle is turned fully, the coin rests on a projection 18<a> of the slide 18 and does not drop until the door is opened. Two halfpennies may be used instead of a penny, the carrier 3 being provided with a lever which forms a stop for the second halfpenny. Indicators. - The indicator 15 is raised and held in its raised position, until the door is opened and shut again, by a pivoted notched detent 17 engaging the projection 15<A> and actuated by a pin 16 on a slide 14, which is connected by a link 3a with the coin carrier 3. When the door is shut, the detent 21 on the slide 18 coacts with an incline 15<b> on the projection 15A so that it passes under the projection and restores the detent 17 to normal position. Coin-slit closing-devices; fraud, preventing.- The coin slot is closed by a pivoted gravity or spring-controlled member 24, Fig. 2, held in its slot-closing position by two depending levers 25 connected by a spring 26. A coin, when being inserted, separates the levers 25 and is then forced past the member 24 which is swung to an upright position. The member 24 is restored to its slot-closing position by a cam surface 27 on the slide 18 and is held therein by a projection 15<c> on the indicator plate. The slotclosing device prevents the withdrawal of a coin by a wire after it has released the lock.
