Abstract

<PICT:0910919/III/1> <PICT:0910919/III/2> A doctor for metering and smoothing liquid coatings on flexible sheets, e.g. a liquid comprising or containing an adhesive on a paper sheet, comprises a rod 10 having closely spaced alternating circumferential grooves 4 and ribs 2 and being supported throughout its length by a socket 20 open at one side, the opening being bounded by edges 22, 24 conforming in shape with, and closely engaging, the periphereal surface of the rod 10. The edges 22, 24 are serrated to engage the ribs 2 and grooves 4. The socket 20 is formed of two members 16, 18 which may be equal, as shown, or unequal, see Fig. 4 (not shown) and may be rigidly clamped at 30, 301 or secured to a flexible blade, see Fig. 3, (not shown). The rod 10 may be rotated, e.g. at 2 to 3 feet per minute, by a motor M through a shaft 6, sprocket 8, belt 12 and sprocket 14. Specifications 662,099 and 759,281 are referred to.
