Abstract

953,667. Coating-apparatus. CHAMPION PAPER CO. Ltd. June 21, 1961 [Sept. 19, 1960], No. 22517/61. Heading B2B. [Also in Division Dl] A doctor device for use in coating sheets, e.g. of paper, comprises a rod 10 supported throughout its length in an elongated socket-like holder 20 having spaced, parallel edges 32, 34 which form a slot exposing part of the periphery of the rod 10, part at least of the holder 20 being shaped to provide a cavity 36 between the holder and the rod for a cleaning liquid or a cleaning device, e.g. a cord 47, or a round brush. The holder 20 comprises two members 22, 24, secured together at 26 and mounted on a rigid support 44 or on a flexible support, see Fig. 5 (not shown). Liquid, e.g. water or alcohol, is admitted through one or more nipples 39 to the chamber 36, overflow being removed by a trough 43. The cord 47 is drawn through the chamber 36 between rollers which are driven by a motor which also drives a shaft 6 which rotates the rod 10 through chain 14 and sprockets. The members 22, 24 may define a second chamber 38 which may be provided with cleaning liquid or cleaning means. In a modification, Fig. 4, the holder-defining members 52, 54 are equal and symmetrically placed, and a member 55 divides the chamber 56 into two portions which communicate by an aperture 62. In all embodiments, the rod 10 may have a grooved surface and the members 22, 24, 52, 54 have serrated edges 32, 34, as described in Specification 910,919. Specifications 499,732, 759,281, and U.S.A.
