904,283. Centrifugal pumps. JAEGER MACHINE CO. June 16, 1961 [Feb. 17, 1961], No. 21795/61. Class 110 (1). In a self-priming centrifugal pump of the kind in which the impeller casing 16 is contained within a main casing 10 forming a primary water reservoir, a foraminous baffle 25 extends from the outlet 21 of the impeller casing to the outlet 27 of the main casing so as to direct discharged solids towards the outlet 27 while permitting water to pass through the baffle to recirculate in the main casing. Preferably the baffle 25 is carried by a member 28 interposed between the casing 10 and a discharge elbow 22. A flap valve 24 opens downwardly when the pump needs priming, to admit water from the casing 10 to the inlet 19 of the impeller casing 16. The valve 24 closes upwardly when the normal pump suction has been established. A check valve 14 is provided at the pump inlet.
