Class 120(1) A plurality of needle strips, on the combing cylinder of a rectilinear combing machine, comprise progressivily increasing numbers of needles per unit length from strip to strip; these are preceded by strips having rows including an even number of widely spaced needles per unit length, the needles of one strip being aligned symmetrically opposite the spaces between needles of the preceding strip. In an example, the first three strips with widely spaced needles have an even number of needles per unit length; subsequent strips have an odd number of needles per unit length which is either a prime number or a product of primes which do not occur as factors in the preceding row. To obtain correct lateral alignment of the needles, a light beam is directed through the needle bars taken in adjacent pairs, producing light and shadow zones; the strips are then disposed so that the shadow zones of two strips lie between those of preceding pairs of strips.
