Abstract
860,861. Thermal switches. ELLENBERGER & POENSGEN G.m.b.H. March 24, 1959 [April 23, 1958], No. 10224/59. Class 38 (5). A switch operated by a bimetal 13 has a snap-action through a rocker 20 freely pivoted on the end 16 of the bimetal and the end 6 of the spring carrying the moving contact 7. A screw 11 sets the operating temperature. A latch 24 may be provided to prevent the switch closing when the bimetal cools, a manual release button 28 being provided. The switch normally closes when the bimetal cools, a variable time lag being controlled by a brake member 31 engaging an abutment 33 adjusted by a screw 35. The member 31 is spring-loaded so as not to delay the breaking action. Thermal element 13 is shown with a heating coil in series with it but the coil may be omitted. In a further construction the thermal element is exposed to ambient temperature, e.g. in a motor casing, a perforated cover on the switch permitting air circulation. Three such members having a common, elongated, rocker and a single brake and catch mechanism may be used as a three-phase relay and such a construction is disclosed.
