In a vertical centrifugal pump of the partialadmission type, the pump casing is subdivided into a suction chamber, a pressure chamber and a reservoir, the reservoir lying outside the impelling current. In the pump shown (Fig. 3 being a section on the line C-D of Fig. 4), liquid enters a suction chamber 2 from a suction branch (not shown) and passes through a suction port 3 to the impeller 4. The liquid is discharged through a port 10 to a pressure chamber 12 and thence to a discharge branch 13. Any air entrained with the liquid is discharged into the pressure chamber 12 through a separate discharge port 11. A reservoir 8 is filled with liquid from the pressure chamber 12 through an opening 16. When the pump is stopped, the reservoir 8 and a portion of the pressure chamber 12 divided off by a weir 14 remain filled with liquid. Liquid returning from the reservoir 8 through a duct 17 to the suction chamber 2, or through a duct 18 to the lateral working channel 15, or through a duct 19 to the impeller hub, serves to prime the pump when it is started. In a modification, the reservoir 8 is filled from the suction chamber 2 instead of the pressure chamber 12. Specification 407,295 is referred to.
