Abstract

1,264,715. Priming centrifugal pumps. ECODYNE CORP. Sept.11, 1969 [Sept.20, 1968], No.44928/69. Heading F1C. A centrifugal pump is primed by a vacuum pump 66 which draws air from an annular recess 55 in the top wall of the volute 35 into a priming chamber 62. After all the air has been withdrawn, liquid rises within the priming chamber 62 until it contacts an electrode 75 to complete a circuit which switches off the vacuum pump 66. Since the port 63 connecting the priming chamber 62 to the volute 35 is located in a low-pressure area remote from the discharge branch 12, it is not necessary to provide a valve in the port to prevent liquid being forced into the priming chamber 62 during normal running of the centrifugal pump. A restricted clearance between the impeller 45 and an-annular ridge 80 prevents solids in the pumped liquid from clogging the port 63 and fouling the priming system.
