Abstract

Medicinal ion-exchange resins are made by condensing phenol or resorcinol with formaldehyde and potassium metabisulphite at temperatures not exceeding 80 DEG C. The resultant resins containing potassium and hydrogen ions may be modified by the addition of potassium hydroxide and ammonia to the reaction mixture. In the examples, potassium metabisulphite and formalin (and in Example 3 glycerol) are dissolved in water and (1) a solution of formalin in aqueous potassium hydroxide; (2) an aqueous solution of resorcinol, potassium hydroxide and ammonia; (3) a solution of resorcinol in aqueous potassium hydroxide added, the resultant reaction mixtures being condensed at 70 DEG to 80 DEG C. and the product of Example 1 coarsely pulverized, washed with distilled water and finely pulverized.ALSO:Medicinal ion-exchange resins comprise the products of condensation at temperatures not exceeding 80 DEG C. of phenol or resorcinol, formaldehyde and potassium metabisulphite. The resins may be modified by the inclusion of caustic potash and ammonia in the original reaction mixture (see Group IV (a)). The products may be used for oral administration, e.g. for promoting duiresis and for treating oedema and potassium deficiency. The resin may contain a potassium hydrogen molar ratio of 25 to 75, 50 to 50 or 75-25. In the case of the 25 to 75 resin, 5-10 per cent anion exchange is added to avoid acidosis.
