Abstract
850,296. Stuffing-box substitutes. LICENTIA PATENT - VERWALTUNGS - G.m.b.H. Sept. 4, 1957 [Sept. 13, 1956], No. 27933/57. Class 122 (5). The rotary shaft 15 of a machine, for example a hydrogen cooled electric generator, is sealed by an annular member 12 which is slidably mounted in the machine casing 11, urged by pressure oil against the action of a spring 23 into sealing contact with a collar 14 on the shaft, and sealed to the casing 11 at its inner and outer peripheries by rubber U-section packing-rings 17, 18 expanded by the pressure oil. The rings 17 and 18 are housed in grooves 19 and 20 in the member and in the casing, respectively, and pressure oil supplied to the space 13 urges the member 12 towards the collar and is also fed to the grooves 19 and 20 through channels 21 and 22 respectively. Pressure oil is also led to the contact faces of the collar 14 and member 12 through channels 16 in the latter. When the pressure oil fails or is cut off the member 12 is withdrawn from the collar 14 by the spring 23.
