Abstract
891,419. Stuffing-box substitutes. NEIL, J. B. Sept. 30, 1960 [Oct. 1, 1959], No. 33264/59. Class 122 (5). A packing ring 24 between relatively rotatable members 20, 22, such as the shaft and casing of a steam turbine, is sealed to one of the members, such as the member 22, at a cylindrical surface C, e.g. by carbon rings 26, 28, so as to permit relative axial displacement between the ring and the member and is provided with axially opposite, annular sealing and throttle faces 32, 36 co-operating with corresponding faces 34, 38 on the other member 20 so that, when the faces 32, 34 are in engagement, relative rotation occurs therebetween and the faces 36, 38 are spaced apart to define a throttle orifice T. The mean diameter of the faces 32, 34 is different from that of the faces 36, 38 but approximately equal to the diameter of the surface C. Both packing ring 24 and casing 22 are formed in halves bolted together. Steam leaking past the carbon ring 28 is drawn off at 42 whilst steam leaking past the sealing faces 32, 34 and subsequently condensed is thrown outwardly by collar 44 through radial holes 46 to be drawn off at 42. In operation, when the sealing faces 32, 34 are in contact the pressures on faces A and B of the ring are equal; if the sealing faces part slightly steam flows through orifice T and the pressure on face A becomes greater than that on face B urging the sealing faces into engagement again. Various other arrangements are described in which the packing ring is non-rotatably mounted with respect to either the casing or the shaft.
