Abstract

831,168. Stuffing-box substitutes. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Sept. 29, 1958 [Oct. 28, 1957], No. 33578/57. Class 122 (5). In a seal for the shaft 1 of a hydrogencooled alternator or other gas-filled machine in which an end face 9 of a seal ring 3 is urged into contact with a rotatable part such as a collar 2 on the shaft, the face 9 is provided with two concentric circular grooves 12, 16, that groove 16 nearer the interior of the machine being supplied with liquid at relatively high pressure and the other groove 9 being supplied with liquid at relatively low pressure and provided with pockets 23 which feed liquid to the seal interface and have small orifices 24 open to the atmosphere. Low-pressure oil is supplied to groove 12 through a pipe 8, chamber 7 and ducts 10 in the ring 3 and high-pressure oil is supplied to groove 16 through a duct 13, chamber 14 and ducts 15 in the ring 3 which is sealed to the housing 4 by packing rings 18, 19 and 21. The part 17 of the face separating the grooves is preferably of labyrinth form. Rotation of the seal ring 3 is prevented by a pin 5 which projects from the housing 4 into a slot 6 in the ring. The pressure of the oil supplied to the groove 16 may be made dependent on the gas pressure in the machine whilst that supplied to the groove 12 may be maintained at a constant value irrespective of the gas pressure.
