993,820. Mechanical seals. GARLOCK Inc. Sept. 16, 1963 [Oct. 9, 1962], No. 36386/63. Heading F2B. A mechanical seal for a rotary shaft 10 comprises an axially slidable and rotatable sealing sleeve 24 which is urged into facial sealing contact with a stationary sealing ring 18 by spring means 38 and sealed to the shaft by packing 32 axially slidably housed in a counterbore in the sleeve 24. The springs 38 are compressed between an adaptor ring 42 and a sleeve 34 secured to the shaft by set screws 36 projecting into axial slots 46 in the sleeve 24 which has a sealing ring insert 26. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, the sealing pressure at the faces 28, 30 due to the springs is augmented by the pressure of the sealed fluid in the casing 14 acting on the sleeve 24, ring 42 and packing 32. In the modification shown in Fig. 3, the packing 56 comprises a V-ring 60 and an expander 62, both of polytetrafluorathylene, which are moved to the left as shown by the pressure of the sealed fluid in the casing 12 which pressure acts on the shoulder 44 of the sleeve 24 to urge the latter against the ring 18.
