Abstract

851,947. Stuffing-box substitutes. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. July 28, 1959 [Oct. 15, 1958], No. 32922/58. Class 122 (5). In a shaft seal for a gas-filled machine, for example a hydrogen-filled alternator, comprising a seal-ring 1 urged against a collar 2 on the shaft and in which sealing liquid is caused to flow between the co-operating sealing faces of the collar and the seal-ring, the sealing face thrust can be adjusted by a number of fluid-pressureoperated pistons 10, Fig. 2, arranged around the seal axis. The ring 1 is slidably and non- rotatably mounted in a housing 8 and is normally urged towards the collar 2 by the gas pressure in the machine and by springs 3 alternating with the pistons 10. Pressure oil supplied to the chamber 6 is led to the cooperating sealing faces of the collar and ring. The thrust on the ring 1, particularly the reduced thrust when the gas is evacuated from the machine, as during vacuum scouring, may be increased by admitting pressure oil to the cylinders 11 of the pistons 10, the cylinders being connected in parallel.
