Abstract

831,191. Moulding shoe soles. WUCHER, R. Aug. 31, 1956 [April 18, 1956], No. 11765/56. Class 87(2). An article of footwear is made by injectionmoulding upon an upper 1 a sole 5 of plastic material, e.g. polyvinyl chloride, by a method comprising forming or providing the upper with a first sole or insole 2, positioning the upper in a mould to provide a cavity suitable for the sole to be moulded, closing and sealing the mould about the upper and injecting the plastic material at the appropriate temperature and pressure into the mould cavity. The mould comprises a core, on which the upper is fitted, a pair of side parts and a cover part, the parts being closed and sealed during the injection of the material and its cooling in the cavity. An intermediate sole 8, of, e.g., flexible metal, cork or glass fibre may first be secured to the insole 2. The edges of the sole 5 may be moulded in line with the sides of the upper 1 or may be somewhat beyond them to form a flange 7 around it. A band or welt 9, Fig. 8, may first be stitched around the base of the upper, composed of thermoplastic material that unites by fusion with that of the sole 5 ; or, instead, a large mesh fabric strip 10, Fig. 11, may be stitched to the upper.
