1,203,379. Boots &c. SEMPERIT OSTERREICHISCH-AMERIKANISCHE GUMMIWERKE A.G. 7 Nov., 1968 [8 Nov., 1967], No. 52737/68. Heading A3B. [Also in Division B5] An article of footwear includes an upper, an outer sole consisting of compact polyurethane, and an intermediate sole consisting of foamed polyurethane bonded to the outer sole and the upper. The compact polyurethane of the outer sole incorporates filling material such as ceramic or glass powder. The shoe may be made by placing a pre-finished sole in a mould cavity, closing the cavity by a lasted upper, injecting polyurethane foam forming material and allowing the material to foam and cure. In an alternative method the compact polyurethane outer sole may be formed by injection moulding in a sole mould provided with a lid, the lid later being removed and replaced by a lasted upper and the intermediate sole then being moulded as above. In a third method polyurethane foam forming material is injected into a sole mould which is closed by a lasted upper and which has a movable sole plate. The intermediate sole is moulded on to the bottom of the lasted upper, the sole plate is then lowered and the outer sole is injection moulded on to the intermediate sole.
