Abstract

797,746. Moulding rubber soles onto shoe uppers. LUDWIG, H. July 10, 1956, No. 21349/56. Class 87(2). [Also in Group VII] A process for vulcanizing rubber soles onto shoe uppers comprises attaching a welt 13 to an upper 10 by a seam 14 with or without a connecting insole or sock lining and placing the assembly on a last 12 so that the edge 11 of the upper extends freely below the last. An unvulcanized rubber sole 19 is placed on a ram 24 and a moulding frame 22 is closed around the upper by a toggle device 26 so that the frame is spaced above the melt as shown. The last 12 is then raised to engage the welt with the frame 22 so that the upper is tensioned and stretched in the manner of a lasting operation. Thereafter the sole ram 24 is raised to produce the vulcanizing pressure which with heat causes the compound 19 to flow and become firmly sealed to the upper and welt and if present to the insole.
