Abstract

828,937. Stuffing-box substitutes. ROCKWELL MANUFACTURING CO. March 1, 1957 [March 12, 1956], No. 6849/57. Class 122 (5). [Also in Group XXIX] In a plug valve, a stem 17 projects through an opening in a part of the body structure, such as cover 18, and at the end adjacent the plug is surrounded by a seal assembly 30 which is axially rigid and radially resilient, and positively transmits to the plug a seating force due to the gland 24 without affecting the radial seal. The seal assembly comprises a rigid ring 32 having inner and outer recesses in which are mounted O-rings 35, 36, each having a crosssectional diameter greater than the depth but less than the width of the associated recess. Further seals are provided by placing a metalbacked asbestos ring 27 between the gland and the seal assembly, and clamping an apertured metal-backed diaphragm 23 between the body and the cover so that its inner edge seats on the top face of the plug under the transmitted force of the gland.
