828,756. Magnetic compositions. LIGNES TELEGRAPHIQUES ET TELEPHONIQUES. Dec. 13, 1957 [Dec. 14, 1956; Sept. 18, 1957], No. 38845/57. Drawings to Specification. Class 38 (2). A ferromagnetic ferrite with a rectangular hysteresis loop is made by compressing and heating a mixture having the composition xFe 2 O 3 , yT 2 O 3 , uNiO, vCuO, sZnO, tCdO, where T is Al or Cr, x+y is in the range 47-50, y is in the range 0-2, v is in the range 3-15, u+v is in the range 25-53 and s+t is in the range 0-25, the heat treatment producing mechanical stresses in the material. In manufacture, a mixture of oxides is ground in a ball mill for 12-48 hours in distilled water, compressed at 0.5-15 tons/sq.cm., sintered at 900 to 1300 C. in oxygen and cooled for 15 hours. The magnetic properties of a large number of different compositions within the above formulµ are tabulated and graphically illustrated, the effects of varying the proportions of different ingredients being shown. To improve the rectangularity of the hysteresis loop a core of the material may be subjected to external mechanical stress. This may be applied by hydraulic pressure, by a clamped rubber band, by a cured enamel coating or by polymerizing a potting resin. The latter may be a non-saturated polyester resin with monostyrene to which is added benzoyl peroxide as catalyst and cobalt naphthenate or oxtoate in white spirit or styrolene as accelerator. A ring-shaped core may be completely coated or surrounded by a band of the resin, or a perforated plate or a set of cores may be coated. The properties of stressed and unstressed cores of 48Fe 2 O 3 , 47NiO, 5CuO are tabulated.
