A magnetic ferrite having a rectangular hysteresis loop, a negative coefficient of magnetostriction and containing substantially equal molecular percentages of oxides of metals in the bivalent and in the trivalent states is made by compressing a mixture of metal oxides including ferric oxide and an oxide of manganese, heating between 1200‹ and 1350‹ C. and cooling slowly in an inert atmosphere. The heating may be for 2-6 hours in nitrogen containing up to 2% by volume of oxygen, and the cooling may be for 15 hours in pure nitrogen. Other oxides of metals in the trivalent state may be of aluminium and chromium, and oxides of metals in the bivalent state may be of magnesium, zinc and cadmium. Suitable limits of proportions of starting materials are given. The percentages of oxides of metals in the bivalent and trivalent states need not be equal, part of the MnO acting as though in the Mn 2 O 3 state after the manufacturing process. The addition of ZnO increases the flux density for a given magnetizing force, and reduces the coercive force, the addition of MgO acts oppositely, without affecting the rectangularity of the loop. The effect of the addition of Al 2 O 3 or Cr 2 O 3 is similar to that of MgO, Fig. 3 (not shown). The mixture must not contain by weight more than 0.5% impurities in general and more than 0.05% of any of SiO 2 , BaO, PbO, and SrO. The oxides are ground in distilled water with iron balls. The compression may be at between 0.5-15.0 metric tons/cm.<SP>2</SP>, preferably 5 metric tons/cm.<SP>2</SP>, giving linear shrinkage of 15% upon sintering. Sufficient shrinkage, between 8 and 30%, is needed to produce mechanical strain. The sintering temperature varies with the constitution of the ferrite, which may also be presintered between 900 and 1100‹ C. and reground. The production of materials is described in which Fc 2 O 3 is associated with MnO; MnO, ZnO; MnO, MgO, ZnO; MnO, MgO; MnO, Al 2 O 3 ; MnO, Cr 2 O 3 ; MnO, MgO, ZnO, Cr 2 O 3 ; MnO, MgO, ZnO, Al 2 O 3 .
