Abstract

827,204. Directional couplers. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Aug. 1, 1957 [Aug. 24, 1956], No. 26039/56. Class 40 (8). A waveguide directional coupler comprises two contiguous ridged waveguides 1, 2 arranged with the ridges 5, 6 back-to-back, long coupling slots 7, 8 being arranged on either side of the ridges. In the region of the coupling slots the narrow walls of the guides are shaped (e.g. by bending or local thickening) so that the surfaces of the ridge are spaced equidistantly from the adjacent waveguide walls. If the guides are correctly terminated, energy introduced into one of the guides is equally divided between both guides. The coupler may be made by soldering two ridged waveguides back-to-back or by soldering two channel-shaped members to a unitary central member which is roughly H-shaped in plan. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 786,645.
