827,116. Variable-speed gear; positive clutches. DAIMLER-BENZ A.G. Nov. 5, 1957 [Nov. 8, 1956], No. 34427/57. Class 80 (2). A motor vehicle axle gear having a bevel gear differential combined with a two-speed sun-planets-ring gearing controlled by an axially slidable selector sleeve to give the different speeds, has sets of clutch teeth on the selector sleeve engageable with corresponding sets of clutch teeth on associated gearing elements, at least one of the sets of clutch teeth being rounded with their centres of curvature offset with respect to lines through the centres of the teeth. As shown, a driving crownwheel 6 has internal teeth 12 meshed by planet pinions 9 supported in a carrier 14 also supporting bevel planet gears of a differential gear, the planet pinions 9 meshing a sun-gear 17 slidden leftwards of Fig. 1 to engage its teeth with an internally toothed stationary reaction ring 21 for reduced drive or rightwards to the position shown to engage internal teeth 20 in the planet carrier 14 for direct drive. The ends of the clutch teeth on the members are rounded, for example as shown in Fig. 3, the rounded ends of the sun-gear teeth 17 having their centres of curvature offset as at 24 with respect to lines through the centres of the teeth, while the rounded ends of the teeth on the reaction ring 21 and the direct drive teeth 20 on the planet carrier have their centres of curvature located at 23 on the lines through the centres of the teeth. In a modified form, Fig. 2 (not shown), the centres of curvature of all the rounded teeth ends are offset with respect to the centre lines of the teeth. In modifications, Figs. 4-6 (not shown), the sleeve 16 fast with the sun-gear 17 is formed with separate clutch teeth for engagement with either or both the reaction member 21 and the solid drive teeth 20.
