Abstract

1,117,347. Change-speed gear. STANDARD-TRIUMPH MOTOR CO. Ltd. 6 Feb., 1967 [10 March, 1966], No. 10493/66. Heading FD2. In a motor-vehicle front wheel drive engine E, clutch C and changespeed gear unit G providing fourforward ratios, and driving, through a differential gear D mounted above or, as shown, below the crank-shaft axis in the sump S, a unitary cluster of four gear-wheels 13-16 on a layshaft 12 are in constant mesh with gears 13a-16a, selectively clutchable by two synchronized double positive clutches 18, 24 to an output shaft 11, and are driven by an input gear 34 independently, journalled at 35, 36 in the gear casing, the input gear being internally splined at 33 to an input shaft 10 to accommodate slight misalignment between the engine and change-speed gear. The input gear 34 may have the same number of teeth as the output gear 13a providing a 1 to 1 top gear ratio.
