Abstract

207,446. Monteil, H. March 6, 1923. Variable-speed gearing. - A simple epicyclic train 5, 7, 6 is adapted as two-speed gearing for bicycles &c. the change being effected by reversing the direction of the driving pedals. The internal gear 6 is carried by a ring 2 secured to the road wheel hub. The sun gear 5 is fast with a chaindriven sprocket 4. The planet gears 7 are carried by a loose ring 8 with a toothed periphery engaged by a click or detent 9. In forward driving of the sprocket, a free-wheel clutch 3 between the elements 4, 2 engages and the gearing turns solid, the click 9 being overrun. On reversed driving, the click holds the carrier 8 fast and the ring 2 is driven in the same direction as before at reduced speed.
