To control excessive slip in a differential for use in a motor vehicle, planet pinions 5, 6 meshing side gears 3, 4 are freely mounted upon a spider 7, which in the form shown is a shaft but alternatively may be a cruciform member, Figs. 4, 5 (not shown), and are provided with ratchet clutch teeth 5 2 engaged by similar teeth on collars 5 3 splined on the shaft &c., a spring 12 biasing the collars apart to engage the clutch teeth.
