819,476. Change-speed chain gear. CYCLO GEAR CO. Ltd. Oct. 17, 1956 [Aug. 4, 1955], No. 22404/55. Class 80 (2). In a cycle change-speed gear of the kind in which the drive-chain 3 is shifted laterally on to differentsized hub sprockets 24 by a single control cable 12 which, through a chain 10, shifts a tension-sprocket carrier 1 mounted on a post 5 slidably and turnable in a pivoted bracket 7, in opposition to the compression of a coil spring 13, which spring is also stressed in torsion to tension the drive-chain, loss of tension in moving from larger to smaller hub sprockets is compensated by causing the control cable 12 to turn the anchored end 16 of the spring. For this purpose the cable 12 passes round a free pulley 19 and is secured thereto by a lug 22 which abuts a projection 23 on a free cup-ring 18 engaged by the inner end 16 of the spring 13, the outer end 15 of which engages a cup-ring 17 fast with the tension sprocket carrier 1. Thus as the control cable 12 shifts the drivechain 3 towards the smaller hub sprockets 24, it also winds up the spring 13 to maintain chain tension.
