Class 39(1) A thermionic valve cathode has an emissive portion 8 consisting of a powdered pressed mixture of alkaline earth metal carbonates and nickel and/or cobalt, backed by an appreciably thicker layer 9 of nickel and/or cobalt, at least the said layer fitting tightly within a shell 1 having apertures or depressions 5, into which apertures the layer 9 is keyed at its periphery. The emissive portion 8 may be a mixture of 70 per cent by weight carbonyl nickel powder, and the remainder mixed carbonates in the molecular proportions 49À5 per cent. Ba, 43À5 per cent. Sr, and 7 per cent Ca. The powders may be compacted inside the sleeve 1 in a die 3, as shown. After the cathode is assembled inside the valve, it is heated to sinter the layers 8 and 9, at the same time activating the emissive material. The nickel layer 8 contains a small proportion of zirconium hydride as a reducing agent, but according to the Provisional Specification this additive is silicon. The nickel in either or both layers 8, 9 may be wholly or partly replaced by cobalt. The sleeve 1 may be of nickel, cobalt, or platinum.
