Abstract
Powder metal compacts of stainless steel powder are produced by mixing the powder with a lubricant, e.g. paraffin wax and calcium stearate, and with a quantity of nickel powder, preferably 5-30 per cent of a size smaller than 300 mesh British Standard Sieve. In an example the mixture is compacted at 35 tons/sq. in. and sintered for one hour at 1300 DEG C., the stainless steel having a composition C 0.14-0.19 per cent; Mn up to 2.0 per cent; Si at least 0.2 per cent; S up to 0.05 per cent; P up to 0.05 per cent; Ni 7.0 - 10.0 per cent; Cr 17.0-20.0 per cent; Fe the balance.
