Abstract
811,005. Locks; sliding bolts. CHUBB & SON'S LOCK & SAFE CO. Ltd. Jan. 30, 1957 [May 7,1956], No. 14142/56. Class 44 A lock for a prison cell comprises a casing 1, 2, 3 housing a main bolt 5 movable between locking and unlocking positions, and a key-operable locking unit 15 which is removably and replaceably secured in the casing and is adapted to engage the main bolt to secure it in the locking position. As described, the main bolt is spring- urged 8 to the locking position and is retracted against the spring by a follower 13 operated by a hand lever 14. A lever 25 is pivoted vertically and urged by a spring 29 to engage a projection 27 on the follower 13 and thereby hold the bolt 5 in the unlocking position until a lug 28, which is formed on the lever 25 and extends through the pLate 1, is depressed by contact with a door-frame. The locking unit 15 is of known pivoted lever type, the bolt 19 being spring urged to the extended position shown in Fig. 1, and locked only in that position. A hook lever 23 is sprung to engage a notch 24 in the bolt 19 and thus avoid shock to the bolt stump 20 and levers 21 when the bolt 19 moves to the extended position. The key used for withdrawing the bolt 19, or another key, may be adapted to align the levers 21 and disengage the hook lever 23 thus permitting the bolt 19 to extend to an extreme low position where it is again locked by the levers 21. A sprung lever 35 abuts the tail of the bolt 19 and thereby causes a disc 31 on the face-plate 1 to indicate the position of the bolt 19. The main bolt 5 is secured in the extended position by the entry of the bolt 19 into the aperture 10; the main bolt may be secured however, although not fully extended, by provision of a step 22 thereon which engages the bolt 19. The locking-unit 15 is mounted by screws 16 within the lock casing so as to be easily removed and replaced. In another embodiment, Figs. 10, 11 (not shown) the lug 28 on the lever 25 is replaced by a camming block projecting through the fore-end 2 and engaged by the edge of a door-frame.
