' 7 Claims. 1013703529) PATEN OFFIC E This invention relates to newanduseful im provements inlocking mechanism and is of particular utility I when embodied in a so-called against an operating member at the inner side of a door causes the'bolt to bereleased so that the door m'ay freely swing outwardly." There are 00-" casions when it is desirable to have the bolt held retracted so that the door may be .freelyopened from the outside, and it is in connection with a" mechanism whereby this end may. be attained.
that the present invention relates.
In the accompanying drawing Fig. 1 is a vertical cross-section of a door with my improved mechanism associated therewith,
the same being shown partly in section and partly" in elevation; Fig. 2 is a view of the inside of the lock detached from the-door and with the cap removed Fig. 8 is a similar view showing the operating parts in different position andshowing a portion of the cap. V v I represents a door, 2 a lock case, 3, a removable cap, and 4 a bolt. 'In this instance the bolt is in the form of a spring latch pivoted at 4'4' in the face 5 ofthe lock. 6 represents the latch-tail suitably connected at its front end with the bolt 4 and provided at its rear end with'a guide plate I. The tail 6 of the bolt 4 is guided between two abutments 88. 9 is a coil spring around the tail 6 and bearing at its rear end against .the usual washer Ill positioned in front of the abutments 8. The forward end of the spring bears toward the bolt 4 so as to project it into its'locking position shown in Fig. 3. I l is a bolt retracting roll-back pivoted at I2 in the lock case. 13
is the end of a manually operable bell crank lever I4 pivoted at 15, usually on the outside of the case p 2 at the inside of the door. The lever end I3 projects through a slot in the case and engages the roll-back I I in such a manner that when the free end of the lever I4 is pushed toward the door the roll-back II will be moved from the position indicated in Fig. 3 to that shown in Fig. 2 and, since the upper end of the lever II engages with the guide plate I, the bolt 4 will be retracted to the position shown in Fig. 2'. When pressure on the lever I4 is released, the bolt 4 will be projected ahead to the locking position shown in Fig. 3. Ordinarily, the free end of the lever I4 is provided with a bar which extends across the door.
A cross-section of this bar is indicated at I6 (Fig.
1). In the event of an emergency such as oocasioned by a fire, pressure against the bar IS in the door opening direction retracts the bolt so that 'the door may-freely swingl'open. Il" represents conventionally a keyoperablelock; such as a cylinder lock for example, "which is acpanic door bolt or latch in which pressure" vcessible at theoutside of the door I for operation hub I9 having an arm 24 by which the bolt 4 may be'retracted when the spindle is turned in the proper direction; This arm 20 normally rests againstthe'upper end' of the roll-back H and hence when the spindle is turned in a clockwise direction, as'vieweol in Fig. 3, it swings the rollback IIJin the bolt retracting directionand thus permits entry from the outside. 25 is a bolt dogging device mounted to oscillate on the roll- 7 back hub I9. 23-24 are spacedzlugs on the'side of 'the dog 2 I. 25 is a short arm mounted on the hub I9 and projecting between the lugs 23 -24.
26. is a friction spring suitably mounted in the}0 case and arranged to stand at one side or the other of ahump, 27 on the hub of the dog 2i to -fricti0nally hol-dit.in one or the other of its extreme'positions, onebeing shown in Fig.2 and the other in "Fig.- 3. Y
Operation;- -,-When the "parts stand as shown in Fig. 3, the latch-bolt 4 may be freely retracted from the outside by a keycapable of turning the spindle I8. When the parts stand as in Fig.
3, the space between the .lugs 23-44 is sufiicient to permit the bolt to be retracted by a key before the short arm 25 will encounter. the lug 23 on the dog 2!. When it is desired to hold the bolt 4 in the retracted positionvshown in Fig. 2 to permit free entry, the bolt 4 is first counter-clockwise direction, the arm 25 will engage lug 24 and cause the dog 2| to SWl ng down in front of the plate I and thus block the advance of the bolt 4. The space between the lugs 23-24 is such that the spindle I8 and the jected by its spring to perform the locking function. At all times when the dog 2I is-off, as
shown in Fig. 3, the bolt 4- may be retracted by p by a suitable'keyinot shown). I8 is a key-opera atedjspindle which is connected with a roll-back repressed to the position shown in Fig. 2; then,
by turning the key-controlled spindle I8 in .a"
, lating bolt dogging means, a key-controlled rollback concentric with said dogging means and operable from the outer side of the door and having one portion for retracting said bolt and another portion for operating said dogging V .a dog for the bolt to hold it retracted, said dog means. a
2. In a panic door bolt, a case, a spring projected bolt, mechanism including means at the inner side of a door to cause thebolt to be retraoted by pressure toward the door, 'bolt dogging means, a key-controlled roll-back. operable from the outer side of the door and having one arm for retracting said bolt and another arm for operating said dogging means, said'dogging means comprising an oscillating member mounted concentrically with said roll-back.
"3. In-a panic door bolt, a case, a spring pro- Q jected bola-mechanism including means at'the inner side of a door to cause the bolt to be reshoulders on said dog at opposite sides of the last mentioned arm and spaced to permit a limited amount of free motion of said arm during operation of the key-controlled roll-back for bolt 1 retracting purposes.
4. In a panic door bolt, a case, a springprQ jected bolt, a bolt retracting roll-back, a device on the indoor side of the case and cooperating with said roll-back to retract the bolt by pres sure on said device toward the case, another bolt retracting roll-back, a spindle therefor key-controlled from the outdoor side of said case, a dog for the bolt to hold it retracted, said dog being mounted on the hub of the second mentioned roll-back to oscillate thereon, and an arm mounted on said second mentioned roll-back to operate said dog to shift it into and out of the boltdogging position. I
5. In a panic door bolt, 9, case, a spring projectedbolt, .a bolt retracting roll-back, a device on the indoor side of the case and cooperating with said roll-back to. retract the bolt by pressure on said device toward the case, another bolt retracted roll-back, a spindle therefor keycontrolled from the outdoor side of said case,
being mounted on the hub of the second mentioned roll-back to oscillate thereon, an arm mounted on said second mentioned roll-back to operate said dogs to shift it into and out of the bolt doggingposition, said last mentioned arm having a limited amount of free movement relatively to one of the parts with which it is associated without affecting the-position of said dog.
'6. In a lock, a case, a spring projected latch bolt, a key-operable roll-back to retract said latch bolt, a latchdog mounted to have limited oscillation on the hub of said roll-back, an arm on said roll-back and engageable with said dog to move it on or off, said dog having'a limited amount of freemovement relatively to the parts with which it is associated to permit said roll-back to be moved to retract said latch when thedog is oif' p 7. In a door look, a spring projected latch bolt,
mechanism including meansfor retracting said bolt from the inner side of a door to which'said lock is applied, a key-controlled roll-back oper-v able from the outer side of such a door to retract said latch bolt, an oscillating dog mounted concentrically with said roll-back, and means I associated with said roll-back and movable therewith and cooperating with said dog to dog said "latch in its retracted position when saidroll-back
