808,379. Severing by tearing. SOC. FOMAC. Jan. 23, 1956 [Jan. 22, 1955], No. 2165/56. Class 31 (1). In apparatus for tearing a strip 1 of paper or cards along longitudinally-spaced transverse preformed lines of perforations of the kind comprising a pair of rollers 3a, 3b which are driven at a greater peripheral speed than a pair of rollers 2a, 2b, the rollers 2a, 2b are driven from an electric motor 4 through a chain 7 which is subjected to the action of a pair of tensioning members 9, 10 pivoted at 11 and acted on by springs 12, 13, the spring 12 being stronger than the spring 13. In operation, when the strip is engaged by both pairs of rollers, it causes the rollers 2a, 2b to rotate at a peripheral speed greater than that derived from their drive, and this causes the tensioning members 9, 10 to swing counterclockwise against the action of the spring 12. When the tensioning member 9 engages an abutment 14, the rollers 2a, 2b are caused to resume their normal speed and the strip is thus subjected to increasing tension to effect tearing of the strip along a preformed line of perforations disposed between the pairs of rollers. Reverse rotation of the rollers 2a, 2b is prevented by means of a pawl 16. The abutment 14 is adjustable according to the spacing between the preformed lines of perforations.
