768,966. Endless belt conveyers. PACKAGE MACHINERY CO. Jan. 25, 1955 [April 26, 1954], No. 2184/55. Class 78 (1). [Also in Groups VIII and XVI] A machine for severing predetermined lengths of tearing tape from a web of tape and advancing the severed lengths comprises means for passing a web of tape over an adhesive applying roll, means for periodically lifting the web from the roll to leave spaced areas of the web free from adhesive, means for subsequently feeding the web into contact with a belt having a greater width than the tape, with the side of the tape free of adhesive engaging the belt, means for driving the belt at a slightly greater speed than the web over a slot in a suction-box, the slot being lengthwise of the belt and of less width than the web and the belt having a succession of perforations which when in registry with the slot apply a suction force to the web, a separating means including a cutting platen positioned between the belt and web to separate the web from the belt and a cutting blade periodically sever the leading portion of the tape from the web, a wheel positioned between the adhesive applying roll and the point of contact of the web with the belt and making a snubbing engagement with the web, and means to drive the wheel at a surface-speed in excess of the speed of the belt to enhance the tension imposed on the web as it passes over the adhesive roll. Tape is fed from a supply roll 9, Fig. 1, over a spring supported roller 13 through a tensioning device 14 resiliently engaging the tape, past heating and smoothing devices 15, 17 between which is a straight edge 19 round a roller 18 and between feeding rollers 10, 11, roller 11 being spring- urged towards driven roller 10. The tape is then passed over a guide roller 20 and lifting- plate 21 over an adhesive applying roller 22 rotating partly in a tank 16, round guide rollers 23, 24 into contact with a driven perforated endless belt 31 moving over a slot in a suction-box 34. The tape is then separated from the belt by a ramp 40 and pin 41 where it is severed by a rotating knife 50, the severed tape being drawn again on to the belt by suction. The speed of the rollers 23, 24 and of the belt 31 is slightly greater than that of the tape to tension it. The ramp 40 has a number of openings and the suction-box slot has a closure beneath the pin 41. All driven parts are driven through suitable gearing from a driven shaft 59 driven by a wrapping-machine.
