1,150,155. Machines for processing leather &c. E. SCHOLZ and H. SCHOLZ [trading as BAYERISCHE MASCHINENFABRIK F.J. SCHLAGETER]. Aug.16, 1966 [Aug. 25, 1965], No.36681/66. Heading C6C. A machine for processing leather or like sheet material, which is passed through the machine, comprises a processing tool and a device for automatically spreading out the material before it reaches the tool, which device comprises elements disposed on both sides of the centreline of the path of the material, which elements engage the material and each perform a circulatory movement, so that they draw the material away from said centre-line in opposite directions substantially perpendicular to said centre-line. The spreading device also comprises members for holding and guiding the centre of the material as it passes between the spreading elements. A machine, Figs.1 and 2, for paring sheet leather 4 comprises a conventional cylindrical paring knife 1, a pressure-applying roller 2 and a holding roller 3, and a plurality of parallel, rotating, spreading rollers, or endless, travelling belts 5 mounted on rollers 6, which engage one or both faces of the leather, on each side of its centreline, and thus draw the leather away from the centre-line in the aforementioned opposite directions. The belts may be toothed, and may be pressed against the leather by bars 11 urged by springs 12. The device for holding and guiding the central part of the leather comprises rollers 7 and 8. The roller 8 may be mounted in a yoke 9, and urged towards the roller 7 by a spring 10. Plates 13 and 14 may be provided, before the knife, to bend the leather and prevent leather parings from reaching the spreading mechanism.
