Abstract
804,549. Cycle frames. PHILLIPS & CO., Ltd., J. A. Nov. 23, 1956 [Nov. 23, 1955], No. 33535/55. Class 136(3) A frame for a motor cycle or motorized bicycle consists of a pair of tubes 2 directed downwardly and rearwardly from the steering head tube 1 in closely spaced sideby-side relation to form a fore part 3 of the frame. To the rear of the part 3 the tubes are cranked outwardly and bent in a median part 4 from which they are continued rearwardly and horizontally in spaced parallel relation to form rear stays 5 terminating in mountings 18 for the rear wheel axle. The tubes 2 are of oval crosssection with their major axes vertical. A plate 6 is secured between the tubes 2 at the median part 4. A flanged plate 7 is secured to the plate 6, the box being completed by a transverse strap 8. Alternatively, the strap 8 may be formed integrally with the plate 6. Vertically spaced receiving holes 10, 11 are provided in the plates 6, 7 to form a cantilever mounting for a seat pillar tube 9. An engine mounting bracket 12 is secured to the underside of the plate 6. The bracket 12 has a boxlike part 13 with outward flanges 14 at its upper side edges through which fixing bolts 15 are passed. Below the part 13 depends a channel shaped part 16 between the flanges of which the crank case of an engine may be received. A cycle stand may also be mounted on the part 16. The tubes 2 are bridged at the fore part 3 by a bracket 19 which braces the frame and also provides an attachment point for another part of the engine or its accessories. The junction between the tubes 2 and the steering head tube is reinforced by a fishplate 26, A hollow cowling 27 may be secured by welding to the plate 7 to enclose the seat pillar 9 to which it may be welded at its upper end. The cowling may be provided with a door so that its interior may be used as a tool box or a carrying compartment.
