Abstract
673,786. Motor vehicle frames, mounting motors. BUDD CO. Oct. 20, 1950 [Dec. 16, 1949; March 22, 1950], No. 25584/50. Classes 79(iii) and 79(iv) A motor vehicle frame has a transverse frame member, which acts as an engine and/or wheel supporting beam secured in a downwardly open transverse recess, the transverse member being mounted by means of fore and aft longitudinally extending brackets thereon which are secured to the frame in overlapping relationship with the interposition of rubber bushes. The downwardly open recess may be formed by interrupting the frame longitudinal members, the gap being bridged by other frame members, or the longitudinal members may be continuous and each be provided with a pair of downwardly extending brackets, a recess being formed between the brackets. As shown in Figs. 1 and 3, applied to a vehicle with integral body and frame, a forwardly projecting sub-frame comprises on each side a longitudinal member 23 and separate extension member 34 which are connected together by side panel 24 reinforced by box section braces 25, 40. In the recess so formed is located the transverse beam 30, see also Fig. 4, which has a pair of brackets 43 at each end by means of which it is secured to the longitudinal members by bolts 45 with the interposition of rubber bushes 46. The transverse beam 30 may carry at its ends the links of an independent wheel suspension (not shown), and may be provided with a front engine mounting. The rear of the engine may be carried by a detachable transverse frame member 26. In a modification, Fig. 7, the box section longitudinal sub-frame members 226 are uninterrupted, and each one has a pair of depending brackets 238, 239, of U-shaped cross-section in plan, which support corresponding brackets 237 projecting from each corner of the hollow transverse member 227, with the interposition of rubber bushes. The upper ends of the depending brackets 238 project upwardly through the bottom of the boxsection longitudinals 226 and are welded to such longitudinals. The steering box 235 may conveniently be bolted to the longitudinal 226 at the position where it is reinforced by one of the brackets 238, tubular distance pieces 257 being located between the side walls to receive the fixing bolts.
