When yarn feeding is discontinued at one feeder of a multifeeder circular machine the end of the outgoing yarn is formed into tuck loops on alternate needles. Similarly, when introducing yarn at an additional feeder the incoming end is tucked on alternate needles. In the production of stockings on a twofeeder machine in which the heels and toes are knitted at a single feeder, tucking on alternate needles at the commencement and finish of the heels and toes when one feeder is taken out of and brought into operation, avoids the formation of eyelets. For this purpose the heel needles 2, 4, 6 of a circular machine have a group 4 with butts of smaller dimensions than the other butts of the other groups 2, 6. The needles are also associated with jacks and those jacks associated with groups 2 have long butts 26 and those associated with group 4 have long butts 26 and short butts 28 alternately, Fig. 6. The usual knitting cams 34, 36, 38 are provided at the main feeder, Fig. 5, and movable clearing and stitch cams 42, 44 are provided at the auxiliary feeder. During knitting of the leg of a stocking, continuous rotary knitting is performed at both feeders with the needles moving anti-clockwise as in Fig. 6. On the last course preceding reciprocatory knitting for the formation of the heel, jack cam 56 is inserted, cam 42 withdrawn and cam 44 partly withdrawn so that cam 44 misses the short butts of the needles of group 4. As the heel needles pass this feeder the needles of group 2 are cleared by jack cam 56 and knit under cam 44, and alternate needles of group 4 are raised by cam 56 take yarn but miss cam 44 and are lowered to tucking height by a cam 46. The intermediate needles of group 4 are not raised by cam 56 but are raised to tucking height by cam 40 such that the yarn extends behind their hooks and this action wedges the yarn between the alternate and intermediate needles so that it is held high in the hooks of the alternate needles. The yarn is withdrawn clamped and severed without being taken by needles of group 6. On the first reciprocatory motion of the cylinder, the heel needles are cleared by cam 34 but owing to the wedging action the yarn held between the needles of group 4 is not cleared below the latches of the alternate needles and accordingly tuck loops are knitted with the yarn at the main feeder. The action for introducing a yarn after knitting the heel is similar, the yarn being introduced in group 2 which are then lowered to tucking height and tucked on alternate needles in group 4 with the main feeder yarn, the wedging of the yarn between alternate and intermediate needles being further assisted for subsequent tucking at the main feeder by taking clearing cam 36 out of operation and introducing a low clearing cam 54. The ring toe is produced at a single feeder and the toe is produced on the instep needles. The sinker cam at the auxiliary feeder is also withdrawn and inserted as the knitting cams are inserted and withdrawn.
